A is for Appalachia

Appalachia can be defined as a place, people ,and a way of life. The place known as Appalachia is Appalachian Mountians. It is an ancient land, perhaps over a billion years old. It is rich with clear mountain streams, thick forest, deep valleys, and he tradition of the people who settled there. The spine of these mountains rises up across eastern United  States  from New York to Alabama. The southern Appalachian Mountains span the entire state of West Virginia, eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina. A few counties in south carolina, northern Georgia, and down though northern Alabama are considered to be of Appalachian traditions as well. Kentucky may not officially be listed here, however, many families in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky still carry on the traditions of their Appalachian ancestors. Many people stereotype Eastern Kentuckians for this reason. Appalachians almost have their own language, such as not pronouncing the "g" sound in words ending in "ing". For example, they might say runnin instead of running, or huntin instead of hunting. Also, it is common for these people to replace the "ow" sound at the end of a word with "er", such as winder instead of window, and holler instead of hollow. Many people think Appalachian people are uneducated for this reason. They are considered to be "country folk" and simple because they do things the old fashioned way.
