Bear Country

There are two types of bears in Wyoming: black bears and grizzly bears. They like to follow hunters because they might have good food (elk, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep and fish). Bears have a good sense of smell. Both types of bears are good climbers, swimmers and can run 35 miles per hour.
How can you tell the difference between black bears and grizzly bears?
A grizzly bear has a hump on its back, short-rounded ears, and is bigger than a black bear.
Pick up small children if a bear is around. If the bear leaves the area, leave quickly but be careful because they might come back.
Do not run away from a grizzly bear. If it comes towards you, stay still and play dead. A good idea is to carry bear spray in your pack.
If you meet a black bear, speak loudly and tell the bear to go away. Wave your arms and make yourself look big. Throw rocks at bear to scare it away.

  1. Kentucky has black bears also. In fact, our school has an apple orchard that connects to the back of our property. Several years ago, a black bear would visit that orchard early in the morning and eat berries off of the bushes that were used to make jellies and jams. We never saw it on school property - thank goodness! We do get an occasional raccoon on our playground though. He is usually trying to find some child's leftover lunch in the garbage can!

  2. Last year we had several spottings of mountain lions near our school. One was seen on the hill behind our school near the preschool building. It was also seen under a school bus by the bus garage. Because of this, we all had to stay inside fore recess for a whole week! That wasn't fun especially because it was nice outside. Do you have any mountain lions where you live?
We've also seen a lot of snakes around school- rattlesnakes and bull snakes. Do you have snakes in Kentucky?
