Crowheart Butte

Crowheart Butte is located in Fremont County on the way to Dubois.

The Eastern Shoshone had a good hunting tround in the Warm Valley (Wind River Mountains) until other tribes and white men tried to take it over. Chief Washakie sent his wife and a messenger to meet with the Crow's Chief Big Robber. Washakie suggested that the Crow hunt in the Owl Creek Mountains and leave the Shoshone with the area around Crowheart. The Crows wanted to wage a fight instead. Whoever wins would get the hunting grounds and the other tribe would have to leave.
Crowheart Butte was so named because of Washakie's victory. He displayed Big Robber's heart on his lance at the war dance after the battle.
