bluegrass music

Bill Monroe  is the father of bluegrass. he invented the style, invented the name, andfor the great majority of the 20th century ,embodiedthe art form. Biginning with his Bluegrass Boys in the 40s.Monroe defined a hard-edged style of country that emphasized intrumel virtuosity, close vocal harmonies, and a fast, driving  tempo. The musical genre took its name from the Blue Grass Boys ,and Monroe's music forever has defined the sound of classicai bluegrass  --a five-piece  acoustic string band, playing preciselyand rapidly, switching solos and singing in a plaintive ,high lonesome voice. Not onley did he invent the very sound of the music.

Crowheart Butte

Crowheart Butte is located in Fremont County on the way to Dubois.

The Eastern Shoshone had a good hunting tround in the Warm Valley (Wind River Mountains) until other tribes and white men tried to take it over. Chief Washakie sent his wife and a messenger to meet with the Crow's Chief Big Robber. Washakie suggested that the Crow hunt in the Owl Creek Mountains and leave the Shoshone with the area around Crowheart. The Crows wanted to wage a fight instead. Whoever wins would get the hunting grounds and the other tribe would have to leave.
Crowheart Butte was so named because of Washakie's victory. He displayed Big Robber's heart on his lance at the war dance after the battle.

Pictures from our home

Mrs. Rogers has had her faithful camera out again, and has taken some pictures from a Sunday drive around her home - the area known as Red River Gorge. We have a post about the gorge in which you can read a little about it, but I thought you might enjoy seeing some primary source pictures.

Driving through the gorge - had to stop and take this lovely picture

in the valley

There are lots of springs like this coming out of the mountains. In some places, this is the only drinking water people may have unless they drive to town. The water company will tell you this water is not safe to drink, but people have been drinking it for generations. It is always clear and cold. And yes......Mrs. Rogers has had a drink from several of these springs on hot summer days : )

There are lots of large rock outcroppings such as this in the Red River Gorge

See the hiker and his dog?

Gannet Peak

Gannett Peak is the highest peak in Wyoming. It is considered to be mountain man country. It has five rugged glaciers on its flank, the largest glacier in the American Rocky Mountains. It is remote and considered an exciting alpine mountaineering challenge to climb to its top. The mountain was first climbed in 1922.This trip is best tackled by strong and experienced climbers with a great stamina and who are well acclimated to high elevations. The trip includes trans-versing glaciers that contain deep crevasses that in the early spring that can lay hidden under the coat of shallow snow.

Fort Bridger Treaty

The 1863 Fort Bridger Treaty with the Eastern Shoshones represented part of a process to clear a corridor for safe travel for  whites emigrating to the west and for railway and communication routes. This Treaty come on the heels of two important events: first the Homestead Act of 1862 created a mechanism to encourage white settlement in the Western territories of the United States.Second, and more important to the Shoshones, the Bear River  Massacre in early 1863 made it quite clear that the Untited States was prepared to go to great lengths to compel Shoshones west of Wyoming to comply with demands for passage.Above all political documents, this one is the most important for the Eastern Shoshones. The Treaty of Fort Bridger , 1868, established the boundaries of the Wind River reservation and guaranteed to the tribe a lasting relationship with the United States. Unlike the earlier Treaty of Fort Bridger , 1863, which merely described the outline of Shoshone Country, a territory that lay west of the Wind River Mountains, the 1868 Treaty gave the tribe the right to occupy what had been their hunting grounds.

Dinosaurs in Wyoming

We never thought about dinosaurs when we thought about Wyoming, until we started this project. We learned that dinosaur bones have been found in Wyoming, and that there are museums that focus on dinosaurs. We also found a couple of interesting facts, which we have listed below:

In the summer of 2003  Frank and Cris Bliss discovered there first dinosaur fossil from the Hell Creck formation.

Scientists are still learning about the age of dinosaurs and tourists of all ages are learning with them.Digging for fossils  is dirty work, but its work that teaches.

Grand Teton National Park

Located in northwestern Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park preserves a spectacular landscape rich with majestic mountains, pristine lakes and extraordinary wildlife. The park's world-renowned scenery attracts nearly four million visitors per year.

All About Devils Tower

There are always new things happening at Devils Tower National Monument. Rock climbing is a big deal here.

On July 4, 1893 local rancher William Rogers became the first person to climb the tower after constructing a ladder of wooden pegs driven into cracks in the rock face. Technical rock climbing techniques were first used to ascend the tower.

Devils Tower National Monument is right in the North-Eastern of Wyoming! It holds a tower of hot rock from a volcano that rises 865 feet from the Mountains bordering the Belle Fourche river.

A Thoroughbred Horse

A Thoroughbred Horse has legs that seem too long for their bodies.

A Thoroughbred is a particular breed, the fastest breed in the world.

About three hundred years ago, some people in England tried to “create”a new breed of horse. They  would cross two kinds of horses, each of which had certain strengths.

Kentucky with its mild climate and lush blue grass, became an unofficial  center of the Thoroughbred Horse breeding in America.

An officially registered horse has a number tattooed inside its lip.

Chief Washakie's greatness

Chief Washakie said "The white mans government promised that if we, the Shoshone, would be content with the little patch allowed us, it would keep us well supplied with everything necessary. Chief Washakie, 1804-1900, was a chief of the Eastern Shoshone of Wyoming. He was noted for his exploits in fighting and also for his friendship with the white pioneers. When wagons and trains were passing through Shoshone country in the 1850s, Washakie and his people aided the overland travelers in fording streams and recovering strayed cattle. He was also a scout for the US Army.

By:sw4
Fremont County was created in 1884. It was named for General John Charles  Fremont, who was a surveyor and explorer searching for the ocean in 1842. His group of  20 men were guided by Kit Carson and Enos, a Shoshone Indian. The Wind River Reservation covers much of Fremont County. The reservation is shared by the Shoshone and Arapaho Indians. Fremont County produces more than half of the uranium in Wyoming, which is second in the United States uranium production.
Jade is also found in Fremont County which is also Wyoming's state gem stone.

Boom and Bust/Oil and Gas

Nothing so dramatically illustrated the fact that Wyoming's economy remained dependent on natural resources, specifically energy resources,as the mid-1970 energy boom and the ensuing bust in the 1980's.Boom and Bust meant that Wyoming was making alot of money because of the oil and gas they had.
