Fort Bridger Treaty

The 1863 Fort Bridger Treaty with the Eastern Shoshones represented part of a process to clear a corridor for safe travel for  whites emigrating to the west and for railway and communication routes. This Treaty come on the heels of two important events: first the Homestead Act of 1862 created a mechanism to encourage white settlement in the Western territories of the United States.Second,and more important to the Shoshones,the Bear River  Massacre in early 1863 made it quite clear that the Untited States was prepared to go to great lengths to compel Shoshones west of Wyoming to comply with demands for passage.Above all political documents, this one is the most important for the Eastern Shoshones. The Treaty of Fort Bridger , 1868, established the boundaries of the Wind River reservation and guaranteed to the tribe a lasting relationship with the United States. Unlike the earlier Treaty of Fort Bridger , 1863, which merely described the outline of Shoshone Country, a territory that lay west of the Wind River Mountains, the 1868 Treaty gave the tribe the right to occupy what had been their hunting grounds.

Dinosaurs in Wyoming

We never thought about dinosaurs when we thought about Wyoming, until we started this project. We learned that dinosaur bones have been found in Wyoming, and that there are museums that focus on dinosaurs. We also found a couple of interesting facts, which we have listed below:


In the summer of 2003  Frank and Cris Bliss discovered there first dinosaur fossil from the Hell Creck formation.

Scientists are still learning about the age of dinosaurs and tourists of all ages are learning with them.Digging for fossils  is dirty work,but its work that teaches.

The Continental Divide

The Continental Divide is the term used to designate the line of elevated land that seperates areas drained to opposite sides of a continent. In North America it is also called the great divide,and seperates west ward flowing and east ward flowing waters. It runs through many US states, including Wyoming.

All About Devils Tower

There are always new things happening at Devils Tower National Monument. Rock climbing is a big deal here.

On July 4, 1893 local rancher William Rogers became the first person to climb the tower after constructing a ladder of wooden pegs driven into cracks in the rock face. Technical rock climbing techniques were first used to ascend the tower.

Devils Tower National Monument is right in the North-Eastern of Wyoming! It holds a tower of hot rock from a volcano that rises 865 feet from the Mountains bordering the Belle Fourche river.

Crops and agriculture of Wyoming

Wyoming has cows and calves. Their crops are wheat, sugar ,beats, beans, barley,corn,oats and hay. Wyoming ranks 8th nation wide in barley production, 20th in hay and 33rd in wheat production. Number of farms in Wyoming = 11,000. Average farm size is 2,726 acres. Total farm land = 30.2 million acres. Wyoming is a cattle country with about 861 of the states total agriculture  receipts being generated by livestock products. 781 of total agriculture receipts can be attributed to bees, cattle, and calves. Hay is the top crop in Wyoming.

My old Kentucky home

The song ''My Old Kentucky Home'', words and music by Stephen Collins Foster, was adopted by the Kentucky legislature as the Kentucky state song on March 19,1928. Foster lived at Federal Hill, which was built between 1795 and 1818. Federal Hill was the name of the building that is now referred to as the My Old Kentucky Home state park.There is a theater there that plays an outdoor production of the story of My Old Kentucky Home.
